TWO MILES DOWN
THE LAST PLACE [ON] EARTH

two miles down
under jungles, jackrabbits and bees
far below the tangled toes of trees

two miles down
deep in solid, airless rock
one hundred sixty-seven degrees hot

two miles down
where not one petal of sunlight falls
a thin oily soup washes mineral walls

two miles down
trapped in rock eighty million years
is the last place on earth you'd expect life to appear

ancient bacteria survive
